Partying at Clubs

DJ Mari Ferrari @ BarZing, Kuching.

It’s been a while since my last shooting at a club scene. I’ve gotta admit, I’m getting a little rusty already!

I think that my EOS 50D is somewhat limited when it comes to photographing club scenes. Pairing 50D with both EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, and EF 50mm f/1.8 II, the former doesn’t give me big aperture to play with lights, while I have problem focusing at times with the latter. I think things would have been improved if I could pair my 50D with a 50mm f/1.4. That should give me aperture wide enough to capture interesting light, at lower ISO sensitivity.

While shooting with 50D, I always try not to push the ISO setting beyond 1600. I find the noise level is not eye pleasing at all, and also that the noise level also depends on what lens you are using. If you’re shooting with a lower grade lenses, then the noise on your image can be really nasty! Due to that, I’m restricting with very little things to play with.

Last but not the list, I hope the lighting setup around the DJ console can improved a little. Maybe we can put a small, warm spotlight focusing on the DJ. That maybe able to balance out the overall lighting problem, and hopefully eliminating the nasty color casting problem.

If you all have tips to share on photographing club scenes, please do share with me here if you don’t mind. Cheers!

The turn out at Red Room, The Junk

Jim Liaw was in town last week. Jim, who won the WPPM Best Wedding and Portrait Photographer award last year, was in town for some official matter. Despite his busy schedule, we were lucky to have him around to do sharing during WPPM’s photographer gathering at Red Room (The Junk) in Kuching.

Jim Liaw during his sharing session at The Junk.

It was an eye-opening stuff he has shared, from technical side of photography, to the business side. He also repeatedly emphasized on the benefit to have a body like WPPM around. This will not only raised the industry’s standard, but it will also help the photographers in Malaysia to grow.

He concluded the gathering with a thorough photo review that night. Even though the comments and critiques were kept short, I’ve picked up quite a lot from there already.

It was definitely all good to have Jim around, hope to see him in Kuching soon. And, I also hoped to be able to attend his next Masterclass, be it in Kuching or KL.

Picture of the Day

A typical sight on a wedding day. As the bride made her way to the church entrance, two of the videographers were closing in behind her.

Here is one of the shots I had last Saturday at St. Thomas Cathedral, Kuching. Somehow, the four subjects were so focused in what they were doing. The Bride, was careful with her movement, as she tried to make her way to the church entrance. Her movement was somewhat restricted by the wedding gown, so she had to be very careful. The lady with the red umbrella, carefully guiding the bride along the way, and was on standby in case the bride needs assistance. Lastly, the two videographers were on full focus with their composition and recording with the camera.

It was a beautiful morning that day. I hope you like this shot.

Picture of the Week — Buddhist Flag

Picture of the Day — Buddhist Flag

Buddhist Flag: The Five colors of the flag represents the six colors of aura which Buddhists believe emanated from the body of the Buddha when he attained Englightenment.

The sky was clear, and very blue on Wesak Day this year. I was not planning to do any shoot that day. In fact, I never followed any of the Wesak Day morning activities at all! I brought along my EOS 50D, paired with only EF 50mm f/1.8 II. I decided to drop by over at Sarawak Buddhist Association after breakfast. My only regret that morning was for not bringing my other lenses. I couldn’t do wide, nor I could do a tele shoot.

For this shot, I hid the sun behind this Buddhist Flag. Shooting on Aperture Priority mode, I set the aperture value to f/14, and tried to meter the flag.

The five colors of the flag represent the six color of the aura which Buddhists believe emanated from the body of the Buddha when he attained Enlightenment:

  • Blue (Nile): Loving kindness, peace and universal compassion
  • Yellow( Pita): The Middle Path — avoiding extremes, emptiness
  • Red (Lohita): The blessings of practice – achievement, wisdom, virtue, fortune and dignity.
  • White (Odata): The purity of Dharma — leading to liberation, outside of time or space
  • Orange (Manjesta): The Buddha’s teachings ‚ wisdom

The sixth vertical band, on the fly, is made up of a combination of rectangular bands of the five other colors, and represents a compound of the other finve colours in the aura’s spectrum. This compound color is referred to as Pabbhassara.

Information on Buddhist Flag for this entry was referred to its Wikipedia entry here: Buddhist Flag.
