Finding Nemo

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

I dived into the deep blue ocean and found Nemo, and his long time friend Dory. Well, not really! During my recent trip to KL, the one thing that really caught my attention in the place was the aquarium tank. It was really beautiful, filled with coral reef, and clownfish as well as the Dory fish in the tank. Amazingly, my friend sort of designed a DIY tank for that set up.

While waiting for them to get ready, I decided to snap some photos of the fish, and coral reef in the tank. All the shots taken here were with EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, mounted on my EOS 50D.

Finding Nemo

Shooting at wide open f/2.8 @ ISO800, the DOF is somewhat thin even at focal length of 59mm, shooting through the aquarium.

Finding Nemo

Dory: At the widest aperture, and at 48mm focal length (equivalent of 76.8mm). DOF is also very shallow.

Toned down the ISO to ISO400, and aperture to f/4. This looks much better.Dory at f/4, ISO400.

Interesting BTS of the Evolution of Game video

Friday, August 12th, 2011

I found this interesting behind the scene video of this Evolution of Game video. It’s a hard work for the team, as they challenged themselves on making the shot manually (the change of prop and setting), and all of these at one take! Good job!

One of the iconic landmark in Kuching — General Post Office.

It’s Monday again. I have decided to make Mondays a “Picture of the Week” day. This week, I am featuring an iconic landmark in Kuching, the General Post Office. This is also a favorite shooting location for the local shutterbugs.

I still have a lot to tweak on the curent theme, and also I need to look for new image gallery plug-in to replace Simpleviewer. I hope to get this sorted out within this week.

Old vs Young, Small vs Big, Conventional Digital vs Innovative Digital

Technology changes our lifestyle everyday. With the emergence of new technology and gadgets everyday, things are just not the way they were back in the days. A decade ago, if you own a mobile phone with TFT color screen, you would be regarded one of the leading pack. In today’s world, it is a norm to see primary school kids, or event young toddlers, having iGadgets (iPhone or iPad) in their hands.

I like how the three subjects in the front row connect in this photo. The men in red, whom I believe is most senior among the three, held up his compact digital camera. A decade ago, such camera is considered luxurious item, not many can afford to buy it. Meanwhile the kid in yellow, held his iPad 2 up high, trying to compose a shot with his device, while the man in the middle looked on.

The senior used a compact, old technology, while the junior has an innovative technology at his disposal. That’s just the way it is now, isn’t it?

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

After upgrading the SimpleViewer Plugin, the gallery is a little messed up. Good thing I haven’t fully deploy my gallery with this plug in yet. Otherwise, there is gonna be a lot of clean up to do!

I’ll try to get this fixed as soon as possible. This is just perfect, I get this extra tiny little things in midst of customizing the new theme for this website. Urgh!! Great!

Partying at Clubs

DJ Mari Ferrari @ BarZing, Kuching.

It’s been a while since my last shooting at a club scene. I’ve gotta admit, I’m getting a little rusty already!

I think that my EOS 50D is somewhat limited when it comes to photographing club scenes. Pairing 50D with both EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, and EF 50mm f/1.8 II, the former doesn’t give me big aperture to play with lights, while I have problem focusing at times with the latter. I think things would have been improved if I could pair my 50D with a 50mm f/1.4. That should give me aperture wide enough to capture interesting light, at lower ISO sensitivity.

While shooting with 50D, I always try not to push the ISO setting beyond 1600. I find the noise level is not eye pleasing at all, and also that the noise level also depends on what lens you are using. If you’re shooting with a lower grade lenses, then the noise on your image can be really nasty! Due to that, I’m restricting with very little things to play with.

Last but not the list, I hope the lighting setup around the DJ console can improved a little. Maybe we can put a small, warm spotlight focusing on the DJ. That maybe able to balance out the overall lighting problem, and hopefully eliminating the nasty color casting problem.

If you all have tips to share on photographing club scenes, please do share with me here if you don’t mind. Cheers!
